How this calculator works

Calendar time to a pilot certificate depends far more on training pace than on raw skill. A full-time Part 141 academy student averaging 4-5 flight hours per week (weather-permitting) typically completes PPL in 3-4 months. The same student doing weekend-only Part 61 training at 1-2 hours per week will average 8-14 months because of skill retention gaps between flights.

The FAA total time benchmarks per certificate are: Private Pilot 40 hours minimum (14 CFR 61.109), Commercial Pilot 250 hours (14 CFR 61.129), Airline Transport Pilot 1,500 hours (14 CFR 61.159) - or 1,250 hours under the Restricted-ATP pathway for graduates of an FAA-approved aviation bachelor's program (14 CFR 61.160).

How long does CFI hour-building take?

From CPL (250 hours) to R-ATP (1,250 hours) you need to add 1,000 hours. A full-time CFI flying 80-100 hours per month at a busy school can reach R-ATP in 10-13 months. A part-time CFI averaging 30-40 hours per month will take 2-3 years.

Does flight simulator time count toward FAA minimums?

Yes, with limits. Approved BATD/AATD device time can count toward instrument training, and FAA Level D full-motion simulators count substantially toward ATP requirements (14 CFR 61.159(a)(3) allows up to 100 hours simulator credit toward ATP). Home-flight-sim hours never count toward FAA requirements regardless of fidelity.
